About FLM Haiti
Since 1982, the Functional Literacy Ministry of Haiti has walked with Haitian communities โ not as saviors, but as partners. Every program we run is staffed by Haitians. Every decision is made with them.
Our Story
FLM Haiti was founded in 1982 by Bishop Leon Pamphile โ a Pittsburgh pastor born in Haiti who refused to accept that illiteracy should define his homeland.
He started with one literacy class. Today, FLM runs 70+ government-certified literacy centers across 11 Haitian communities, a Pre-K through Grade 13 school in Thomassin, a year-round medical clinic, and a technical institute training the next generation of electricians, plumbers, and IT workers.
The ministry has never strayed from its founding principle: Well Being through Well Doing. Every program we run is designed to be sustainable, Haitian-led, and dignity-first.

Every teacher, nurse, pastor, and administrator in our Haitian programs is Haitian. We resource the work โ we don't replace the workers.
No pity photography, no "before the Americans came" storytelling. The people we serve are protagonists, not projects.
Short-term mission trips have their place. But real change requires a ministry that stays. We've been there 43 years. We're not going anywhere.
87ยข of every dollar goes to programs. Our Form 990 is public. Our audited financials are published annually.
